Jahangir Karim sentenced to five years for grooming

Today at Truro Crown Court, Jahangir Karim was sentenced to a total of five years imprisonment for a number of charges relating to grooming a young girl from Helston in Cornwall.

CPS Crown Advocate, Julian Herbert said: "The CPS worked closely with Devon and Cornwall police throughout this necessarily lengthy and complex investigation and it is testament to the hard work of the whole prosecution team that Karim pleaded guilty and the victim was not required to give evidence in court. We hope that the sentence passed today will bring some comfort and a degree of closure to the victim.

"This case illustrates that there are offenders who cast their net wide among children who have online access, taking advantage of their trust and naivety. The CPS treats cases such as this very seriously and will always prosecute where there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to do so."

Karim 'groomed' a 15 year old girl over a number of weeks using social networking and instant messaging sites. He then drove across the country from London to Helston to have unprotected sex with her.

He was charged with and subsequently pleaded guilty to meeting a child following sexual grooming, three counts of sexual activity with that child, and two counts of attempting, via social media, to incite other under age children to engage in sexual activity.
