Ex-boyfriend kidnaps former partner

Joe Shopland (25) of Newland Walk, Bristol appeared at Bristol Crown Court for sentencing having been found guilty of kidnapping.

Shopland offered his ex-partner a lift to work in March last year; however things took a sinister turn when his partner got in the vehicle. Shopland refused to let his ex-partner out of the vehicle and as she tried, she was bundled back in, before he drove off at speed.

The ordeal was to last for one and half hours and only ended when he drove his ex-partner to his mother’s house.

Judge Martin Picton jailed him for 20 months, which included an eight month term for a previous case of dangerous driving. Passing down the sentence, Judge Picton said: "Both of these offences demonstrate impetuous behaviour. You behaved in a way which was wholly unacceptable."

CPS South West District Crown Prosecutor James Le Grys said: "This was long period in which Joe Shopland possessed complete control. This was most definitely a harrowing experience and one that undoubtedly frightened her."

Shopland was also disqualified from driving for two years and ten months and told he will be required to pass an extended driving test after the disqualification period and was also given a restraining order banning him from contact with his victim.

James added: "It is hoped that the sentencing handed down today brings solace to his ex-partner as she moves forward from this appalling ordeal."
