CPS authorises charge over Olympic flame explosion threats

CPS South West has today authorised the police to charge Darren Cole, 40, of no fixed abode, with threats to cause criminal damage likely to endanger the life of another.

CPS District Crown Prosecutor Dean Lampard said: "Having reviewed this case in line with the Code for Crown Prosecutors, I have today decided that there is sufficient evidence to charge Darren Cole and that it is in the public interest to do so.

"The allegation is that Mr Cole made a phone call to the Sun newspaper (who subsequently advised the police) threatening to blow up his vehicle near the Olympic Torch procession. A camper van, registered to Mr Cole, was found by Avon and Somerset Constabulary in the centre of Taunton near the procession route. An explosion coming from the van would have endangered the life of anyone nearby.

"The case is still in its early stages but we are working closely with Avon and Somerset Constabulary and we are all taking this matter very seriously."

Darren Cole has been remanded in custody and will appear at Taunton Deane Magistrates' Court on 30 May 2012.
