Couple sentenced following admission of mistreating baby

A couple from Bristol have been jailed after a 10-week-old baby was found to have suffered 14 fractures to his body.

Rowan Spodris, 25, and David Andrew Toye, 32, both of Lawrence Weston, both admitted a charge of child cruelty at Bristol Crown Court.

The couple appeared before His Honour Judge Patrick for sentencing yesterday; David Toye was sentenced to 13 months imprisonment and Rowan Spodris was sentenced to 11 months imprisonment.

Concern was raised by a health visitor in March 2016, who spotted an injury on the victim. He was taken to Bristol Children’s Hospital where he was found to have multiple injuries, including a fractured skull. Medical examinations found the injuries he suffered could not have been caused by accident.

CPS South West District Crown Prosecutor James Le Grys said “An extremely young victim received some horrific injuries and we must be thankful to the health professionals who brought this horrendous crime to light.”

The child has made a full recovery from his injuries and is now safe and well.
