Alexander Channer given life sentence for murder of Colin Payne

Alexander Channer, 55, from St Austell, Cornwall, has today been handed a life sentence with a minimum custodial term of 15 years for the murder of Colin Payne, 72, from Helston.

CPS Crown Advocate Julian Herbert said: "Devon and Cornwall polices diligent investigation meant Alex Channer had little alternative to entering a guilty plea to this murder.

"Colin Payne was a trusting friend to Alexander Channer, letting him into his home and his life, and he had that trust abused in the worst way possible.

"Our thoughts are today with the family and friends of Mr Payne, who, through Channer's guilty plea, have at least been spared the pain of a lengthy trial. Nothing will compensate them for their loss but I hope that the way this case has concluded has brought them some comfort."

Alexander Channer pleaded guilty to Colin Payne's murder and was sentenced by Judge Graham Cottle at Plymouth Crown Court today.
