New Chief Crown Prosecutor for South Yorkshire

14/08/2007

Nigel Cowgill has this week joined CPS South Yorkshire as Chief Crown Prosecutor and Group Chair for South Yorkshire and Humberside.

Nigel says: I am delighted to be joining CPS South Yorkshire.  The Area has an excellent reputation both nationally and within the local criminal justice system.  I will be working closely with all our criminal justice system (CJS) partners in order to ensure that the CJS continues to bring more offenders to justice and that the people living here continue to feel safe.

Nigel has worked in the CJS since joining Leeds Magistrates Court from school as an administrative assistant in 1974.  In 1986 he joined the newly created CPS in West Yorkshire.  He was promoted to the post of Branch Crown Prosecutor at Wakefield in 1999 and also held the positions of Head of the Bradford Criminal Justice Unit in 2001 and Head of the Leeds Trials Unit in 2002.  Nigel took up his most recent position as Chief Crown Prosecutor in Humberside in 2003.

In 2006, under Nigels leadership, Humberside CPS was assessed as an "Excellent" Area by the CPS Inspectorate.  Only three Areas out of 42 received this accolade including CPS South Yorkshire and CPS Suffolk.
