Finding a Solution for Anti-Social Behaviour in South Yorkshire
01/02/2006
CPS South Yorkshire is today (Wednesday 1 February) hosting an event, Nuisance Solutions, aimed at finding the best way to tackle anti-social behaviour in South Yorkshire.
Nuisance Solutions is a unique event. It will provide an opportunity for police officers and local authority specialists to join CPS lawyers. Together they will address the question of how agencies working in South Yorkshire can rid the community of the blight of anti-social behaviour.
Sue Steeples, CPS South Yorkshires anti-social behaviour specialist says: The fight against nuisance and anti-social behaviour continues to be a challenge to those of us tasked with finding the right solution to meet the needs of the communities within South Yorkshire.
The CPS, the police and the local authority each have powers to tackle anti-social behaviour, but we need to work together. It is for this reason that we have decided to host this unique event. It will give us the opportunity to look at how we can best combine the powers already available, to find the solutions that are right for the communities of South Yorkshire.
It is important to stress that the answer is not just about increasing the amount of anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) being issued. We are looking at what else can be done. Obviously our prime aim is to prevent anti-social behaviour from occurring in the first place but where it does we need to ensure that we are all working together to use our combined powers to best effect.
We will be looking at solutions for preventing, enforcing and rehabilitating those responsible for anti-social behaviour. This will include considering whether options such as a conditional caution may be more appropriate in some cases.
Nuisance Solutions marks an exciting time ahead for CPS as for the first time lawyers are helping to devise solutions to problematic behaviour before the offender reach the criminal justice system. Lawyers are playing an integral role in liaising with communities to share the experiences of those affected by anti-social behaviour.
Colleagues from the neighbouring CPS Areas of West Yorkshire, Humberside, North Yorkshire and Derbyshire and their anti-social behaviour partners will also be joining CPS South Yorkshire at the event. This will allow them to take the initiative forward in their Areas.
