Hate Crime
TACKLING HATE WITH A FIRM HAND
We prosecute racist and religious crime fairly, firmly and robustly.
This type of crime is particularly hurtful to victims as they are being targeted solely because of their personal identity, their actual or perceived racial or ethnic origins, or their faith.
Certain offences can be prosecutes specifically as racially or religiously aggravated offences, these include: Assault, Harassment, Criminal damage, Public order offences.
As with any crime there must be enough evidence to pass the evidential test.
Where there is evidence of racial or religious motivation the public interest will almost always be in favour of a prosecution.
Evidence of racial or religious aggravation makes any offence more serious and if convicted the defendant will face a harsher sentence.
