Equality and Diversity Expectations Statement for the Bar

Reporting format for first progress reports 2008


Please note: This template will be required to be completed by large sets (45+) within one year of the Expectations Statement coming into effect; by medium sets (20 to 45) within two years of the Expectations Statement coming into effect; and by smaller sets (under 20) within three years of the Expectations Statement coming into effect. There is also a separate template for second and subsequent progress reports. As a guide, progress reports should be four sides of A4 in length.

  1. Introductory paragraph

  2. This should be a brief description of the Chambers, its size, numbers of members, pupils, staff.

  3. Equality and diversity policy or policies

  4. This should be a summary paragraph on the steps to be taken to produce an equality and diversity policy or policies. It should indicate what the policy or policies cover against the areas identified in the Expectations Statement including maternity, paternity, parental leave and flexible working and reasonable adjustments to improve access. It should indicate where the JASC and CPS can obtain copies.

  5. Equality and diversity actions to implement the policy or policies

  6. This should be a summary paragraph on the actions taken, being taken or planned to implement the equality and diversity policy or policies. It should indicate what the main actions cover against the areas identified in the Expectations Statement. It should indicate where the JASC and CPS can obtain copies of the action taken or planned.

  7. Equalities monitoring and under-representation

  8. This should include a summary paragraph which includes a demographic breakdown of members, staff and pupils by ethnicity, gender and disability. It should summarise any actions taken or planned to address any under-representation identified in the demographic breakdown. It should summarise any positive action taken or planned including in relation to disabled people. It should also include any objectives set to help secure a more representative Chambers. It should indicate where the JASC and CPS can obtain more detailed information if required including on applicants, interviewees and appointees.

  9. Training

  10. This should include a summary paragraph on any equality and diversity training undertaken or being planned including topics to be covered and who is to be trained (ie members, pupils and/or staff). This should also summarise any action taken or planned to ensure familiarisation with CPS key policies. It should indicate where the JASC and CPS can obtain more detailed information on equalities training and training plans if required.

  11. Ensuring equal access to and fair allocation of work

  12. This should include a summary paragraph on how the Chambers ensure or plans to ensure equal access to and fair allocation of work. It should summarise the work to ensure equal access and fair allocation against the areas identified in the Expectations Statement. It should indicate where the JASC and CPS can obtain more detailed information on Chambers' activity to ensure equal access and fair allocation of work if required.

  13. Handling complaints

  14. This should be a summary paragraph on the Chamber's policy and arrangements for handling of complaints including harassment complaints. It should indicate where the JASC and CPS can obtain further detail if required.
