Equality and Diversity Expectations Statement for the Bar

Introduction

The CPS with the support of the Bar Council launched an Equality and Diversity Expectations Statement for the Bar on 14 March 2007. This Expectations Statement takes effect from 1 April 2007. It's purpose is to set out the equality and diversity expectations of Chambers whose members are working for or seeking work from the CPS.

The assessment of progress against the expectations set out in the Statement will involve self reporting by Chambers supplemented by CPS monitoring. Self reporting will commence from April 2008 with a system of tiered reporting involving:

  • Chambers with 45 or more members will report progress annually
  • Chambers with 20-45 members will report progress every two years, and
  • Chambers with 1-20 members will report progress every three years.

A set of frequently asked questions will be available shortly.

Any queries regarding this Statement should be directed either to seamus.taylor@cps.gsi.gov.uk or on 020 7796 8766 or to Pam Bhalla or Kathryn Hamylton at EqualOpps@BarCouncil.org.uk or on 020 7611 1320.
