Two men jailed for Leigh manslaughter

Two men have today been jailed for a total of 19 years at Liverpool Crown Court for the manslaughter of 50 year old Edward Wood outside Ocean's Eleven Chip Shop on Railway Road in Leigh on 4th May 2016.

Kevin Darbyshire kicked Edward Wood once to the head, and Dwayne Turner punched him once to under the chin as he sat in a doorway.  They then stole items from his pockets before leaving the scene on pushbikes.

David Graham, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West said: "Kevin Derbyshire and Dwayne Taylor carried out an unprovoked attack upon Edward Wood, who was sat on the floor in a drunken state.  They accused him of spitting at them, before each delivering one violent blow to his head and face. Darbyshire kicked him once to the head causing him to hit his head on the wall and slump further to the floor. Turner then proceeded to punch him once under the chin.

"Mr Wood had offered no violence to the pair and was highly vulnerable due to him being intoxicated. He was unable to defend himself. Before they left him unconscious on the floor, they rifled through his pockets taking anything they could find.

"Today as they begin their prison sentences, they must now face up to the consequences of their violent actions.

"I would like to offer my condolences to the friends and family of Edward Wood, our thoughts are very much with them at this time"

Individual sentences:

Kevin Darbyshire was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for manslaughter. He also had a previous community order revoked for a separate matter and was re-sentenced to 3 years imprisonment to run consecutively. Total 13 years imprisonment.

Dwayne Turner was sentenced to 9 years imprisonment for manslaughter.
