Teenager jailed for life after being extradited for murder
21/12/2011
A teenager who pleaded guilty to the murder of 16 year old Giuseppe Gregory in a pub car park in Manchester has been jailed for life after being extradited from the Netherlands to face a murder charge.
He was arrested in Amsterdam in June after he had been on the run since the killing in May 2009.
Moses Mathias, now 18, subsequently pleaded guilty at a hearing at Manchester Crown Court. He was today told that he must serve at least 18 years in jail.
In March 2010, Njabulo Ndlovu and Hiruy Zerihun, then aged 19 and 18, were jailed for life and ordered to serve minimum terms of 21 years and 23 years respectively for the murder.
John Dilworth Head of CPS North West Complex Case Unit said:
"There was overwhelming evidence that Moses Mathias was responsible, with others, for the killing of Giuseppe Gregory and the case against him was so strong that he was left with little option but to plead guilty to murder.
"He went to great lengths to avoid arrest and escape justice, even fleeing the country to do so, but the police and CPS were determined to use every possible avenue to ensure that he would eventually be prosecuted and brought before the court. We worked closely with the police and the Dutch authorities to arrange for his arrest on a European Arrest Warrant and for his speedy extradition to the UK. I am pleased that he is finally facing justice today and now begins a life sentence for his part in Giuseppes murder."
