Justice Of Peace Sentenced for Expenses Fraud
19/02/2013
Carlton Janson has been sentenced today at Burnley Crown Court to 8 months imprisonment suspended for two years for fraud and obtaining property by deception.
Whilst serving as a Justice of Peace at Bolton Magistrates Court between 2006 and 2011 he fraudulently claimed over £22,000 in expenses. The expense claims were made for time periods whilst he was off sick, on annual leave and on days when he did not work. He also continued to make claims after he had retired.
Kate McAlinden, District Crown Prosecutor said:
"The role of a Justice of Peace is a position held in high esteem requiring the utmost honesty and integrity.
"Carlton Janson's fraudulent expense claims were a substantial and prolonged breach of the trust of the public. He obtained the money which he was not entitled to from public funds and undermined the very laws he was employed to uphold.
"We will continue to bring before the courts those who behave with such dishonesty."
