Former scout master jailed for sexual abuse

12/05/2017

Norman Thompson, a former sea scout leader from Wigton, Cumbria, was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment at Carlisle Crown court today for indecent assaults committed against seven victims.

Norman Thompson, abused the boys who were aged between 11 and 15 at the time of the offences over a period of nearly 15 years between 1984 and 2000. He committed a significant number of the offences against boys who were scouts in his charge at the time, and he abused some of the victims during residential trips.

He admitted 29 indecent assault charges and one charge of making indecent photographs of a child at earlier hearings.

Isla Chilton from CPS said: "Norman Thompson abused the position of trust he had as a scout leader and targeted young boys he knew through this work. He preyed on their youth and vulnerability and subjected his victims to serious sexual abuse. They have shown real courage in being prepared to give evidence against him. Because of their courage he is now beginning a prison sentence where he can no longer pose a danger to children."
