Death of Nellie Geraghty - Man Charged With Manslaughter

The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge a man in connection with the death of Nellie Geraghty in Oldham.
Nazir Afzal, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS North West Area, said:
"I have today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mark Royle with robbery and with the manslaughter of Nellie Geraghty.
"Mrs Geraghty, who was 79 years old, was found unconscious with head injuries on 24th November 2011 in an alleyway in Shaw, Oldham. She had been robbed and was clutching the broken handle of her handbag which had contained her husband's ashes. She sadly died later in hospital.
"The decision was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."
