Manslaughter sentence for Newcastle man

A man who beat an acquaintance to death during a drinking session was sentenced today at Newcastle Crown Court.

David Anthony Moore launched a fatal attack on Paul McGeorge (37) while they were drinking together in March of last year in a house at Wingrove Avenue in the Arthurs Hill area of Newcastle.

Moore (28) of Bentinck Terrace, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was today sentenced to 10 years and 5 months.

Gerry Sydenham, Head of the Crown Court Unit at CPS North East, said: "The sudden nature of the sustained attack by Moore gave his victim, Paul McGeorge, little opportunity to defend himself.

"Although this assault was severe, there was insufficient evidence to show that Moore had intended to inflict such serious injuries on Mr McGeorge, and that is why the charge of manslaughter was appropriate.

"Our sympathies lie with the family and friends of Paul McGeorge at this time, but we hope that Moore's lengthy sentence brings them some measure of comfort."
