Karl Bestford sentenced to life for murder of his landlord

Karl Bestford was today sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his landlord, Simon Meech in July of last year.

Bestford, 35, was found guilty during trial at Newcastle Crown Court before being given the life sentence, of which he must serve at least 22 years.

Gerry Sydenham, Senior District Crown Prosecutor for CPS North East, said:

"We are pleased with the sentence handed down to Karl Bestford today. Despite the savage nature of this murder, Bestford has shown little remorse for his actions, continuing to deny his guilt despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

"Bestfords victim, Simon Meech, has been described as a model landlord by his other tenants and our deepest sympathies lie with his family. I would hope that this significant sentence provides some measure of closure for them."
