CPS wins "victimless" prosecution

CPS Northumbria has succeeded in convicting a 16 year old youth of a serious assault, despite only one witness providing police with a statement and the victim refusing to co-operate.

The youth, who can't be publicly named because of his age, carried out the vicious and unprovoked attack in a crowded bar in Sunderland city centre earlier this year. The 58 year old victim, who was hit in the face with a bottle, was left with serious and permanent injuries. The attacker ran off immediately afterwards.

Despite the bar being packed at the time, only one witness came forward, while the victim refused to give officers a statement.

At a court hearing before Sunderland magistrates, CPS lawyer Helen Wareham has succeeded in winning a conviction against the teenager for the asault. He was given a 12 month detention and training order, and told to pay his victim £250 compensation.
