CPS says no winners in the case of PC Dougal

A Northumbria policeman has been jailed for three years for causing the death by dangerous driving of 16 year old Hayley Adamson.

John Dougal was driving his patrol car at 94 miles an hour in a 30 miles an hour zone, moments before he struck Hayley who had been attempting to cross the road.

The tragedy happened in the Scotswood area of Newcastle in May last year.

During his trial, a jury heard how Dougal had been pursuing a suspect vehicle, but failed to trigger his blue lights or siren.

Speaking outside Newcastle Crown Court following the sentencing, Durham Chief Crown Prosecutor Chris Enzor said: "There simply are not any winners in this case. Hayley has tragically lost her life and Mr Dougal has now been sentenced to prison."
