The Role of The Crown Prosecution Service

The Crown Prosecution Service is the government department responsible for prosecuting criminal cases investigated by the police in England and Wales.

As the principal prosecuting authority in England and Wales, we are responsible for:

  • advising the police on cases for possible prosecution
  • reviewing cases submitted by the police
  • determining any charges in more serious or complex cases
  • preparing cases for court
  • presenting cases at court

DPP welcomes transfer of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) prosecutors to CPS

Keir Starmer QC said: "I welcome the Attorney General's approval of the transfer of Defra's prosecution function to the CPS from 1 September 2011.

"Consolidating prosecution services allows prosecutors to share expertise and best practice, as well as bringing with it natural efficiencies. I look forward to incorporating the Defra team into a new central casework division at our Headquarters, and welcoming the staff to the CPS."
