Youth crime

The Crown Prosecution Service acts in partnership with other agencies such as the police, the youth justice board, children's services, courts and youth offending teams. Each area of the CPS has a youth justice specialist who oversees the prosecution of youth crime in their area.

CPS statement following convictions in Ernest Norton case

Damaris Lakin, from the CPS Central Criminal Court Trials Unit, said:

"This case highlights the need for young people in gangs who engage in anti social behaviour to accept responsibility for the consequences of their criminal activities.

Ernest Norton was enjoying a game of cricket with his 17 year old son James and as a direct result of the actions of this gang that game ended in his tragic death.

I would like to thank the witnesses and the Norton family for their contribution which has resulted in this successful conviction. We add our condolences.

Many of the witnesses in this case were young witnesses from the local community. They showed tremendous public spiritedness in coming forward and giving evidence, which enabled us to secure this conviction."
