The Role of The Crown Prosecution Service

The Crown Prosecution Service is the government department responsible for prosecuting criminal cases investigated by the police in England and Wales.

As the principal prosecuting authority in England and Wales, we are responsible for:

  • advising the police on cases for possible prosecution
  • reviewing cases submitted by the police
  • determining any charges in more serious or complex cases
  • preparing cases for court
  • presenting cases at court

CPS welcomes plans to tackle animal rights extremism

The Crown Prosecution Service welcomes the new measures announced today to tackle animal rights extremism. The measures will assist the specially trained network of prosecutors across the country when dealing with these cases.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Ken Macdonald QC said: "The CPS continues to be committed to tackling people who for ideological reasons target legitimate, law abiding industries, companies, and theirCPS welcomes plans to tackle animal rights extremismCPS welcomes plans to tackle animal rights extremism employees by committing criminal acts.

"The new measures announced today will assist prosecutors across England and Wales who deal with these types of cases."

A national network of prosecutors who deal with animal rights extremism cases was established in February this year. The network was formed to act as the local point of contact with the local police and to guide prosecutions within their Area and will be further developed and supported.
