Two men in court following death of Merseyside Police Officer.


Two men appeared before Wirral magistrates today (Thursday 8 October) following the death of police officer Dave Phillips in the early hours of Monday, 5 October 2015.

PC Phillips was on duty when he was knocked down and killed as he tried to stop a stolen truck that is thought to have been taken in a burglary at an estate agents in Birkenhead.

Clayton Ronald Williams, 18 years, of Wheatland Lane, Wallasey, is charged with his murder, attempted grievous bodily harm of PC Tom Birkett who was also at the scene, burglary and aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle.

Phillip Stuart, 30 years, of Mayfair Court, Oxton, is charged with aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle and burglary.

Both men have been remanded in custody.

Senior Crown Prosecutor with Mersey-Cheshire Crown Prosecution Service, Helen Graves, authorised the charges and was the prosecutor at Wirral Magistrates' Court today.

Williams will appear before Liverpool Crown court tomorrow for a bail hearing and the two will appear before the Crown Court on October 22 2015 for a preliminary hearing.

Criminal proceedings against the two men have now begun and they have a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.
