Milkman jailed for 29-year catalogue of abuse

Milkman jailed for catalogue of abuse over almost 30 years

A man from Wirral has been jailed for nine and a half years for a catalogue of abuse inflicted on 10 young boys over 29 years.

David Sparks, 61, systematically befriended and groomed a series of boys before sexually abusing them.

The boys, who were aged between 10 and 15 years of age, were at first introduced to pornographic material by Sparks before he moved on to commit sex acts and assaults on the youngsters.

A key feature of his crimes was his longstanding employment as a milkman. He was able to provide casual work for those he sought to abuse, winning their friendship and sometimes providing an excuse for boys to stay with him overnight before the early morning starts.

Sparks, from Wallasey, pleaded guilty to 20 offences between 1972 and 2001. His catalogue of abuse began in 1972 when he was 23 and his victim was only 13.

Jailing Sparks, Judge David Harris QC told Liverpool Crown Court that Sparks' behaviour was a "gross breach of his trust and power".

Prosecutors praised the courage and bravery of the victims who came forward to give evidence.
