Man sentenced for raping two women

A man who raped a 21 year-old student after following her into halls of residence has been sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court.

Mindaugas Butkus originally from Lithuania but who was living in Chepstow Street, Walton, will also be sentenced for raping another woman in her home on 15 January 2012. The victim, aged 35, was repeatedly assaulted and raped.

The second incident occurred less than a month later on 5 February 2012. The victim was walking back to her halls of residence in Marybone, Liverpool, after a night out.

As she entered the building, Butkus followed her through the doors and pretended to call for the lift. As she went to use the stairs to get to her room, he pulled out a knife and attacked her. She was repeatedly raped and robbed before Butkus made his escape.

Lesley Haworth, Senior Crown Prosecutor from Unity, a joint Merseyside Police and CPS team which investigates and prosecutes serious sexual assaults in the county, said: "Mindaugas Butkus treated both women with absolute disdain, subjecting them to terrifying and brutal attacks.

"Both women were assaulted in or at the doorstep of their homes - where they're supposed to feel safest.

"I must thank them and commend them for their bravery in coming forward and giving evidence in what must have been very difficult circumstances."
