Statement from Mersey-Cheshire Chief Crown Prosecutor, Siobhan Blake, about Hate Crime Awareness Week

Hate Crime Awareness Week runs from the 8th to 15th October.

Siobhan Blake, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Mersey-Cheshire Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Hate crimes strike at the core of who we are as people.

"We should not have to live in fear because of our sexuality, sexual orientation, race, religion or disability and should be able to go about our daily lives without fear of abuse, harassment or worse.

"All too often people can feel that this type of offending is 'just one of those things' and 'something they have to put up with'.

"They don't. In 2015/16 Mersey-Cheshire Crown Prosecution Service prosecuted over 800 hate crimes and secured convictions in nearly 84% of cases."
