Drugs gang gets total of 152 in jail

A drugs gang which 'supplied suppliers' in three countries has been jailed for a total of 152 years at Liverpool Crown Court.

The gang had its base in Merseyside but distributed drugs, including heroin and cocaine, to contacts in England, Scotland and Wales. Organisation of the operation revolved around the defendants John Cooke, from Birkdale, and James Swarez, from Crosby.

Nick Evans, Crown Advocate from CPS Mersey-Cheshire, said: "This was a very sophisticated group which effectively ran a successful, nationwide business distributing and selling Class A drugs. Their main commodity however was misery as these drugs would end up on the streets of Britain, blighting the lives of dozens of communities."

Investigations into the gang began in 2011 into the activities of the group. They found that the usual routine was that organisers Cooke and Swarez would receive high purity substances from Paul McDonald, from Huyton, and Brian Harrison, from Speke.

John Wildman, from Kirkby, Cooke and Swarez's 'right hand man', negotiated deals with Cardiff-based drug dealer Jonathan Cromwell, James Beck, from Preston, and father and daughter Edward and Roseanne McCreadie and Gordon Smith, all from Glasgow.

Once the deals were done Cooke, Swarez and Wildman would then deploy couriers David Law, David Jolly and Brian Earley to deliver supplies to suppliers and collect payments.

"The sentences reflect the shocking level of criminality of this group. Their lifestyles show that they made huge amounts of money through their activities, but thought nothing of the terrible consequences of their sordid business."
