Community Experts Work With CPS To Improve Support For Victims And Witnesses

Local community groups and justice partners have been enlisted to improve the way Merseyside Crown Prosecution Service supports victims and witness.

Representatives from organisations such as Merseyside Police, Victim Support and Liverpool City Council's City Safe initiative joined staff from CPS to recommend new ways to contact people involved with cases.

Sharon King, Group Communications Manager, CPS Mersey-Cheshire, said: "We have a duty to contact victims and witness when we make certain decisions. Sometimes the messages that we have to deliver are very sensitive - such as when we are letting people know that a case has been discontinued.

"We wanted to ensure that the language and method of communication was clear and jargon-free, but more importantly was more sensitive and supportive.

The consultation proved very successful and the new-style communications are soon to be implemented.  "We are working to a set of Core Quality Standards and Standards 7 and 8 focus on the way we treat victims and witnesses. This exercise is just one area where we're looking to improve our service," added Sharon.
