Chester Crown Court team moves to Liverpool

CPS Mersey-Cheshire is improving the way it delivers its services to all its stakeholders.  The Area has developed specialised units, centralised support services to reduce duplication and increase efficiency, and are leading the way on electronic working.  The next stage of this evolution involves the Chester-based Crown Court team moving into the Royal Liver Building. This move has taken place.

The Area Crown Court Unit is now in operation and will deliver a more streamlined service, whilst at the same time improving quality by deploying experienced advocates, lawyers and support teams to work on cases from across Merseyside and Cheshire.  Our services will not be compromised and the key responsibilities of this unit are:

  • All Crown Court cases from across Merseyside and Cheshire will be handled by the Crown Court Unit from the Liverpool office;
  • All correspondence in relation to cases dealt with by the Unit should be directed to a known contact at the Crown Prosecution Service, CPS Mersey-Cheshire, 7th Floor Royal Liver Building, Pier Head, Liverpool L3 1HN. DX 700596 Liverpool 4;
  • Telephone numbers for known contacts remain the same (even those with a Chester 01244 prefix). The main switchboard can be reached on 0151 239 6400
     The unit will maintain standards on written advice, case preparation and case progression.
     A key function will be to determine the suitability of cases expected to result in an Early Guilty Plea and subsequent liaison with the defence;
  • One centralised team of administrative staff will provide Crown court expertise and improve the resilience that we offer;
  • The unit will assume full responsibility for Crown Court case progression,  to include quality and timely service of briefs and additional evidence matched to hearing dates; and
  • We will continue to use the expertise of our Crown Advocates to present cases at court

The creation of one Crown Court Unit are designed to improve how cases are dealt with and iprove the service provided to the Criminal Justice System across Merseyside and Cheshire.
