Three men sentenced for violent attack on London train

09/01/2015

Ian Young, Desmond Lillington and Joe Lillington were all sentenced today at Blackfriars Crown Court for a violent attack on a passenger on a London commuter train on 21st January 2014. All three were convicted of causing actual bodily harm to the victim, and causing an affray. In addition Ian Young and Desmond Lillington were convicted of criminal damage.

Joanne Jakymec, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London, said: "Shortly before 7pm on 21st January 2014 a crowded commuter train arrived at Edmonton Station where Desmond Lillington was there to meet it, armed with two baseball bats. He had received a telephone call from his nephew Joe Lillington and Ian Young who were aboard the train asking him to meet them at the station.

"The call was made as a result of Joe Lillington having been asked not to stand on the feet of the victim, a fellow passenger, to which he took exception.

"Young and Joe Lillington left the train for a few minutes but ensured it did not move from Edmonton Station by pulling the emergency lever as they alighted. Acting together, Joe Lillington identified the presence of the victim in the train carriage and Desmond Lillington and Ian Young used the baseball bats to smash the glass in the doors and climb in.

"They then pursued the victim through the carriages of the train causing panic amongst the passengers, and set about the victim with the baseball bats.

"This was an appalling display of violence committed on London's transport network in the presence of hundreds of commuters. Londoners should be able to freely use transport networks without fear of such violence and I hope that these convictions send a message that perpetrators will be brought to justice."
