Teenager convicted for the murder of 16-year-old Derek Boateng

Shawn Green, 16, was sentenced to life with a minimum of 12 years at the Central Criminal Court today (8 November) for the murder of Derek Boateng on 23 April 2013.

Baljit Ubhey, CPS London Chief Crown Prosecutor, said: "The untimely death of Derek Boateng on his 16th birthday shows the fatal consequences of knife crime.

"This murder occurred in broad daylight on a busy bus in north London.

"Green violently confronted Derek as soon as he spotted him on the same bus.

"He was not acting in self-defence when he fatally stabbed Derek in the chest and his actions amount to murder.

"This must have been a terrifying ordeal for the other passengers on the bus and I would like to thank those witnesses who came to court to give evidence.

"CPS London is committed to working with its police partners to tackle knife crime which can destroy lives and devastate families.

"I hope that this conviction gives some small comfort to Derek's family. Our thoughts are with them at this time."
