Statement following the conviction of Darrell Desuze
13/03/2012
CPS London lawyer Gary Dolby said:
"Upon reviewing all the evidence in this case the Crown Prosecution Service has concluded that a guilty plea to one count of manslaughter sufficiently represents the actions of Darrell Desuze.
"On Monday 8th August Darrell Desuze made his way to Ealing, a borough he did not live in, solely to participate in the violent disorder.
"As well as playing a significant part looting from numerous shops - Desuze did more. With a single punch he assaulted Richard Bowes, a 68 year old man dismayed by the destruction and violence befalling his community - a man who was simply trying to prevent further damage.
"The punch happened in a split second. The force left Mr Bowes incapable of protecting himself from falling onto the pavement and left him with a severe head injury.
"This case truly sums up the futility of last summers riots. In a single moment an elderly man suffered devastating injuries, his death caused by a 16 year old willingly participating in the violent disorder who will now serve a long period of imprisonment.
"In such a difficult time for the family of Richard Bowes I hope that today's convictions provide some comfort."
