Paedophile ring sentenced for sexual offences against four young boys

29/08/2014

Five men were sentenced today at Croydon Crown Court for a number of sexual offences committed against four young boys aged between six and 15 in the 1970s and 1980s. All five men had connections with members of a church in Sydenham and in particular its church choir.

Baljit Ubhey, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London, said: "This was a case of prolific sexual abuse perpetrated by a ring of paedophiles in the 1970s and '80s.

"The victims in this case have had to deal with the impact of this abuse for more than 30 years. I would like to praise their courage in coming forward and reporting their abusers. Their bravery in giving evidence has helped to finally bring these men to justice.

"The defendants took advantage of the trust placed in them by their victims and their parents as they presented themselves as honest and trustworthy members of the community. A number of them were active members of the local church and became friends with the parents of their victims, which gave them access to the children.

"These men preyed on vulnerable boys and plied them with alcohol, gifts and affection - the defendants encouraging each other to abuse the boys. In order to protect themselves they would carry out the abuse in isolation, so that each victim believed it was only happening to them.

"The actions of these men were appalling but I hope these convictions provide some comfort to the victims. I hope it also provides other victims with the courage and confidence to come forward and report abuse that may have happened to them, no matter who is alleged to have carried out the abuse or when."
