Mother and son sentenced after Ealing riot death
17/04/2012
17 year old Darrell Desuze, convicted of manslaughter in connection with the death of Richard Mannington-Bowes on 8 August 2011, has today been sentenced to eight years in prison.
The sentence imposed covers the manslaughter offence and four counts of burglary which Desuze admitted in November 2011.
His mother Lavinia Desuze was found guilty after trial of perverting the course of justice after destroying his clothes. She has today been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Daren Streeter, Head of Homicide for CPS London said:
"These sentences reflect the seriousness of the crimes committed by Darrell and Lavinia Desuze.
"For the single moment when he punched an innocent man who was simply dismayed at the violence in his local community Darrell Desuze will now serve an 8 year prison sentence.
"His mother was acting to protect her son but her actions were wholly inappropriate and criminal. They could have had a detrimental effect on the administration of justice. She too will serve time in prison.
"At the start of this month we had prosecuted almost two thousand defendants in connection with the riots last summer and we continue to give charging advice on more than ten cases each week. However, this case will stand out as one of those which truly sums up the futility of the riots and the devastation that it brought to many of those who live in London. In one moment, a life was lost and the lives of many were changed forever."
