John Stalker was sentenced to 24 months custody, suspended for 18 months, and 180 hours of unpaid work in the community, after pleading guilty to two counts of fraud at Kingston Crown Court on 13 December.

Paul Domas-Pheghe, CPS London prosecutor, said: "This was a simple and opportunistic case of fraud where Stalker had seized the chance to benefit from the victim's money to the total of £296,324.18.

"He discovered details of the victim's bank account with a large amount of money in it in the empty flat below his own. He then went on to drain money from this account into his own account in a number of transactions over 33 months.

"The strong case built against him and the overwhelming evidence meant Stalker had no choice but to plead guilty. CPS London is committed to tackling fraud to ensure that people who work hard for their money are not ripped off by opportunistic fraudsters."
