Man sentenced for attempting to murder his wife and causing serious injury to his daughter

Dilaver Bellikli, 46, was sentenced today at Wood Green Crown Court to 16 years imprisonment for the attempted murder of his wife and the wounding of his daughter in North London on 7th February 2015. Bellikli pleaded guilty to the attempted murder today and had previously pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding on 5th July.

Kay Scudder, CPS London Senior Crown Prosecutor, said: "This was an extremely violent case where Dilaver Bellikli showed a clear intention to murder his wife, even at the expense of injuring his daughter.

"On the evening of 6th February Dilaver Bellikli had been drinking and smoking cannabis. In the early hours of the next morning he and his wife had argued and this argument became more and more heated until he wrapped a kitchen cloth around her neck and tried to strangle her.

"At this time two of the couple's daughters were upstairs in the flat and they heard their mother screaming for help. The daughters rushed downstairs and managed to pull Bellikli's hands away from their mother's throat.

"One of the daughters then tried to call the emergency services and while she was doing this Bellikli grabbed a knife and began stabbing his wife. The other daughter then tried twice to grab the knife to save her mother, sustaining serious injuries to her hands.

"The vicious attack only came to an end when Bellikli believed he had killed his wife. He calmly walked away leaving the two daughters to deal with what he believed was their dead mother.

"I would like to thank all three women for supporting the prosecution and praise their bravery. Bellikli has now been brought to justice for this abhorrent crime."
