Man admits wedding day rapes

A man has admitted raping a woman on his wedding day in a prolonged sexual attack.

Derry McCann, 28, attacked his victim in a park in Hackney just after midnight on Friday 13 January and subjected her to a two hour ordeal. Later that day McCann married his pregnant girlfriend.

He pleaded guilty to four offences of rape against his victim and to the robbery of her phone when he appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court today (2 March 2017).

CPS London reviewing lawyer Andrew Held said: "This was a terrifying, violent and prolonged attack involving rapes committed by a man intent on inflicting fear and psychological suffering.

"The strong prosecution case which led to today’s guilty pleas included victim testimony, an ID parade, CCTV footage, and bad character evidence based on a similar rape committed by McCann in 2006.

"I would like to thank McCann’s victim for her courage in helping bring this prosecution and hope his conviction provides some sense of justice for her."

McCann will be sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on April 28.
