Lewisham man jailed for horrific sexual attack

04/05/2011

A Lewisham man who subjected a woman to a horrific sexual attack was yesterday (May 3, 2011) jailed for eight years.

Linda Edema-Sillo, CPS London reviewing lawyer, said:

"Wagnall subjected this victim to merciless beatings before forcing her into degrading sexual acts, raping her and recording part of the assault on his mobile phone. Whatever she said or did, she was not consenting, having been beaten by this man.

"This was a very sensitive case which deeply affected all of those involved in the prosecution and investigation. We would like to pay tribute to the courage of the victim in coming forward and hope she can take some comfort from this individual being brought to justice."

During the course of 9th and 11th of July last year at his Lewisham flat, the defendant, Nariah Wagnall, 20, beat the victim mercilessly with a belt overher face and body. He also forced her to penetrate herself with a golfing umbrella and raped her.

Wagnall pleaded guilty to one count of Actual Bodily Harm, one count of Assault by Penetration and one count of Rape. He was yesterday (May 3) sentenced at Croydon Crown Court to two years for the ABH and eight years for Assault by Penetration and Rape to run concurrently; a total of eight years. The jury were shown footage of the latter part of the assaults, whichWagnall had recorded on his mobile phone.
