CPS Statement on HMCPSI Performanace Assessment Report of London Traffic Unit
16/03/2010
Following publication of the HMCPSI performance assessment report of London Traffic Unit, Head of the Unit Lorna Burns said:
"We welcome the report and will be seeking to implement the aspects of improvement identified by the Inspectorate. The report recognises that 91.1% of our cases have a successful outcome. I hope that the aspects of improvement identified will lead to further strong results.
"In London Traffic Unit we deal with a number of serious and sensitive cases and I am pleased that the Inspectorate has noted the work we do with victims, witnesses and the families associated with our cases. We have a close working relationship with our police colleagues and this helps us to ensure people involved with cases are kept informed about what is happening.
"It can be difficult for people to understand why some decisions are taken by the Crown Prosecution Service and in the last year we have written 70 letters offering further explanation and clarification. However, we still seek to improve further upon that, working with Family Liaison Officers and offering to meet families if appropriate.
"The planned expansion of our unit in the next year will mean an increase in the volume of work we deal with. By dealing with Crown Court cases, we will be able to offer continuity to the cases we deal with and make greater use of the skills of our prosecutors.
"I want Londoners to be assured that traffic offences are taken incredibly seriously by the Crown Prosecution Service and that there is a dedicated unit working hard to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice."
