Five men sentenced for attack on American student in June 2013

Five men have been sentenced today for the attack on an American student in June 2013 in East London. Masoom Rahman, Kamrul Hussain, Shahadat Hussain, Shelim Uddin and Samad Uddin received sentences at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London, Helen Draycott, said: "Francesco Hounye had been making his way home following a night out in Whitechapel when he was targeted by this group of men.

"All five rained blows upon Francesco as part of the sustained attack during which he was hit over the head with a glass bottle. Francesco was outnumbered and utterly defenceless. He had come to London with the possibility of studying and was instead left with a fractured eye socket and 23 stitches.

"The capital should act as a safe place for all and those who visit the city should be able to enjoy London without fear of violence. This safety was completely violated by the vicious actions of these defendants.

"At CPS London we will continue to work closely with our policing partners to prevent this type of violent crime and make the capital a safe place for everyone."
