CPS statement on HMCPSI Performance Assessment report of Waltham Forest

19/01/2010

Following publication of the HMCPSI performance assessment report of Waltham Forest, District Crown Prosecutor Lionel Idan said:

"We welcome the report and have already begun implementing a number of the aspects of improvement identified by the Inspectorate. The report recognises that the borough is working to a 'fair' standard but we constantly seek to improve further and will be analysing the report fully.

"The Inspectorate has recognised that the borough is charging cases fairly and applying the Code for Crown Prosecutors correctly in the majority of cases. I acknowledge that we need to allow time to ensure cases are as strong as possible when they reach court. I feel that if we can improve the preparation of cases and provide a better service to victims and witnesses we will see conviction rates rise in both Magistrates and Crown Courts.

"The report recognises the positive results we have had in relation to serious violent, sexual offences and hate crimes. For victims of these offences it can be particularly difficult to go to court and give evidence. We do have a number of witnesses who do not attend but I will be working hard with my staff and with our Criminal Justice partners to ensure that the service we provide to victims and witnesses continues to improve.

"Furthermore, ensuring those who are a victim of crime or who witness a crime are kept informed about the progress of a case is of vital importance to the Crown Prosecution Service and we will be seeking to improve the relationship we have with the boroughs Witness Care Unit following on from the Inspectorate report findings.

"We are working well with our Criminal Justice partners and this is highlighted in the report. We have a strong and constructive relationship and will continue to build upon that in the coming months as we seek to improve on the aspects identified by the Inspectorate.

"My team and I are dedicated to the robust prosecution of crimes committed in Waltham Forest, ensuring that offenders are brought to justice, so that the people of Waltham Forest feel safe in their homes and on the streets."
