CPS statement on HMCPSI Performance Assessment report of Lewisham
19/01/2010
Following publication of the HMCPSI performance assessment report of Lewisham, Borough Crown Prosecutor Gary Dolby said:
"We welcome the report and we have already taken steps to implement a number of the aspects of improvement identified by the Inspectorate. The report recognises that the borough is working in a difficult environment to overcome a number of challenges and we will be analysing fully the areas that need improvement.
"The last year has seen a number of big changes in the way we work in Lewisham. Moving into Lewisham police station has been an upheaval for all involved but I am confident that as the new way of working becomes more familiar it will lead to a stronger working relationship with the police, better case management and, hopefully, an increase in the number of successful outcomes.
"I acknowledge that the report highlights a number of aspects of improvement and of particular importance to me are the Inspectorates findings in relation to the service we provide to victims and witnesses. Ensuring those who are a victim of crime or who witness a crime are kept informed about the progress of a case is of vital importance to the Crown Prosecution Service. Ultimately, without people coming forward, we cannot bring perpetrators to justice. I have already had lengthy discussions with the police in relation to this. As a result there is closer monitoring of performance in this area in order that we can identify the best method to improve our procedures.
"I will also be evaluating staffing levels to ensure that we have the proper resources on borough to deal with the increasing workload we have. The Inspectorate has recognised that the borough is charging cases fairly and applying the Code for Crown Prosecutors correctly. However, by improving preparation, ensuring we have the strongest cases possible when we get to court and providing a better service to victims and witnesses, I am confident we will see conviction rates rise in both the Magistrates and Crown Courts.
"There have been challenging times for the CPS in Lewisham but I am hopeful that this is the start of great improvement. The Inspectorates findings make clear what aspects of our work need to be improved. Plus we have a number of new initiatives which have been implemented across London. Although the launch of these initiatives has led to an unsettled period, I am confident that they will improve the way we work.
"My team and I are dedicated to prosecuting thoroughly crimes committed in Lewisham, ensuring that offenders are brought to justice and that the people of Lewisham have confidence in the Crown Prosecution Service."
