Cheryl Jones, CPS London reviewing lawyer, said: "Mr Mikiewicz was a hard-working street cleaner who was robbed of his life for trying to stop a burglar fleeing the scene of his crime.

"After setting off the alarm in the house he was burgling Buckingham fled but was apprehended by the victim who repeatedly used his broom to stop him getting away.

"As more people became aware of what was going on and Buckingham's chance of escape faded he used a knife which he had taken from the house to stab Mr Mikiewicz in the heart.

"We hope that this conviction and sentence brings some justice for Mr Mikiewicz's family.  Our thoughts are with them."

Roger Buckingham was convicted and sentenced today at the Central Criminal Court for the murder of Mr Mikiewicz.
He was sentenced to life with a minimum of 27 years. He had pleaded guilty to theft and burglary at an earlier hearing.
