Hate crime

Tackling hate crimes and ensuring victims of these crimes report offences against them is apriority for CPS East Midlands and our partners in the criminal justice system. Nationally, the CPS has developed policies for prosecuting these crimes.

Racist and religious crime

We recognise that racist and religious crimes do affect communities in the East Midlands. There are many diverse communities in our region and crimes committed against people or communities on the basis of their faith or ethnicity attack the roots of our society. CPS East Midlands is determined to play our part in bringing any such offenders to justice.

Homophobic and transphobic crime

We recognise serious nature of homophobic and transphobic crime and the particular issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people as victims and witnesses. For example some may not want to be 'outed' by the criminal justice process. Our policy statement is clear that we will do all we can to protect people's sexual orientation and gender identity.

Disability hate crime

CPS East Midlands takes disability hate crime very seriously. We are working with our partners in the criminal justice service to increase understanding of disability hate crime, including harassment and abuse. In March 2011, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, outlined the CPS' strategic intentions for prosecuting disability hate crime. Read his article here.
