Nottinghamshire man faces charges over Newstead Abbey lead theft

27/04/2012

A Nottinghamshire man faces criminal charges in relation to the theft of lead from Newstead Abbey, the former home of Lord Byron, in December 2011.

Judith Walker, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS East Midlands said: "The CPS East Midlands charging team has authorised Nottinghamshire Police to charge Gurshoron Bhatti from Kirkby in Ashfield with handling stolen goods and theft. The decision was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors, and in line with the Crown Prosecution Services legal guidance for metal theft."

Proceedings against two other defendants, Francis McShane and Emma Foy, also from Kirkby in Ashfield, initially charged with handling stolen goods, have been stopped. Following a further review of the evidence, it was determined that there was insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction.
