The area covers many different localities and communities, including inner city Nottingham, former mining communities, and some rural areas. The city of Nottingham includes some of the most deprived local council wards in the East Midlands.

The Magistrates Court team prosecutes just over 21,000 cases a year, and the Crown Court team prosecutes almost 3,000 cases. These are managed from the northern office, which is based in the city.

The northern office is also the base for the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Area Business Manager, the Area Operations Centre, which deals with many of the administrative functions for CPS East Midlands, and the East Midlands Complex Casework Unit. Some members of the East Midlands Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Team also work out of the northern office.
