Rapist convicted 20 years after committing crimes

On 27 September Brian Courtman was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court to 18 years in prison for a series of sexual offences, dating back to 1994.
His crimes were first unmasked when a 13-year-old girl disclosed to her mother that Courtman had abused her. After his subsequent arrest, another victim came forward with a story of systematic abuse at Courtmans hands. Courtman was found guilty of 13 extremely serious offences, including seven counts of rape, sexual assault and indecency with a child. The victims gave evidence at trial and provided compelling victim personal statements, which helped to provide the prosecution with a solid case against Courtman.

East Midlands Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Team

CPS East Midlands has a specialist team of prosecutors who work exclusively on cases involving rape and serious sexual offences (RASSO).

These cases often involve specific expertise which our experienced and committed team provides. With victims of these very serious crimes at the heart of the process, the RASSO team consists of 11 highly skilled prosecutors. The team is led by a District Crown Prosecutor, who oversees all East Midlands RASSO cases and, together with her team and a dedicated business manager, ensures justice is delivered for victims.
