Chief Crown Prosecutor and Group Chair Ken Caley explains importance of victims and witnesses to the Crown Prosecution Service:
"Well the aims of the Crown Prosecution Service are very simple.
"First we must inspire confidence in the community we serve. We must have the confidence of the community because they are at the heart of the criminal justice system particularly if they become victims, hopefully not, but if they become victims or witnesses to a crime.
"If it were not for victims and witnesses coming forward and being prepared to give evidence, and stand by the statements they have given to the police then we would not get past first base.
"So it's right that we should look after victims and witnesses. Very many victims and witnesses have their first first experience of court by either observing a crime or becoming a victim of crime. It is very alien to them.
"We of course are very experienced in that so it's right that we should take a lead in looking after them and keeping them informed of the progress of the case as it goes through the system."
