Cambridgeshire: Man admits stealing purse from dead woman

An undertaker has admitted stealing from a dead woman when he was tasked with removing her body.

Grahame Lawlers job was to take the body of Muriel Swift to a mortuary from her Linton house.

But instead, the 37-year-old used the opportunity to steal her purse, which contained £200 cash, her credit cards and PIN details.

Lawler pleaded guilty to the offence of theft from a pending estate at Cambridgeshire Crown Court today and he will be sentenced at a later date.

The Crown Prosecution Service are pleased with the outcome of the hearing.

A spokeswoman said: "Theft is a very personal and serious matter and one we take extremely seriously, and the circumstances around this offence were especially difficult as it evoked very deep emotions on the part of the victims family and the wider community."
