Two charged over death of Summer Grant

15/06/2017

Punam Malhan from CPS East of England said: "I have today advised Essex Police to charge Shelby and William Thurston with gross negligence manslaughter following the death of seven-year-old Summer Grant on a bouncy castle at a funfair in Harlow, Essex, in March 2016.

"They have also each been charged with a health and safety offence.

"Mr and Mrs Thurston will appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court on 19 July 2017.

"May I remind all concerned that Shelby and William Thurston have a right to a fair trial. It is very important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."

Background

The charge against each defendant is:

  • Manslaughter - that on 26/03/2016 at Harlow unlawfully killed Summer Grant;
  • On 26/03/2016 at Harlow, being a self-employed person who conducted an undertaking of a prescribed description, failed to conduct your undertaking in such a way to ensure, so far as was reasonably practicable, that you and other persons (not being your employees) who may have been affected thereby, were not exposed to risks to their health and safety.
